How much does the FLIT-16 weigh?

The FLIT-16 weighs 15kg, with the battery included.

What is the range of the FLIT-16?

Up to 50 km (30 miles), depending on the level of assistance chosen and the type of terrain being ridden on.

Example range from tests = 30.1 miles (50km) for a 90kg rider, on varied terrain, at level 3 assistance.

How does the motor work?

The bike senses how hard you are pedalling, and then amplifies your pedalling effort with power from the rear hub motor.

Placing the motor in the rear wheel allows for greater acceleration and a natural feeling ride.

It's a 220W rear hub motor, powered by a lithium ion battery (which is integrated into the top tube).

What is the motor on the FLIT-16?

The FLIT-16 has a powerful 220W rear hub motor, located in the rear wheel.

The motor is manufactured by Bafang. We chose Bafang for their good reputation within the ebike industry, and the high quality, natural feeling ride that the motor gives.

How do you charge the ebike?

You can charge the FLIT-16 either whilst the battery is inside the bike, or you can remove the battery to charge.

To charge the bike whilst the battery is inside, simply plug the charger into the charging port located on the top tube of the bike and plug into a normal mains socket.

To charge the battery outside the bike, first remove the battery by undoing the seat post clamp and removing the seat post, then sliding the battery out. Plug the charger into the charging port and then plug the other end into a normal mains socket.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

3 hours from zero to full.

Does the ebike charge as you ride?

No, not on the current version of the ebike, but for future models we are looking to feature regenerative braking to recover energy during braking. Dave, our Technical Lead, has written a blog post all about why it's not possible for the FLIT-16 to charge as you pedal. You can have a read of it here. https://www.flit.bike/does-the-flit-16-charge-as-you-pedal/

Will FLIT make a non-electric version of the FLIT-16?

We currently don’t have any plans to build a non-electric version, however it is possible to change the assistance level on our ebike. You can choose from 6 different levels of assistance, including off, if you fancy more of a workout.

Are the handlebars interchangeable with others?

As the handlebars are a sensitive part during the fold of the FLIT-16, on the current version it isn’t possible to change the handlebars. The handlebar height however can easily be adjusted to suit you.

Where is the FLIT-16 manufactured?

We have chosen to manufacture and assemble our ebike in Taiwan, renowned for its high quality manufacture in the bike industry.

I’m worried about bike theft, does the FLIT-16 have any security features?

For your peace of mind, the bike's battery locks into the frame via the lock on the seat post clamp. Given how good modern angle grinders are, the best way to prevent theft is to keep your ebike inside.

Are mudguards available with the FLIT-16?

Yes. You can add mudguards when ordering your ebike through the bike builder. If you've already ordered your ebike, you order mudguards at any time via the Accessories page.

I’m a tall rider, can I ride the FLIT-16 comfortably?

Yes! An extended 600mm seat post will be available, which is suitable for riders who are from 6ft 1" to 6ft 6" tall. The handlebars are also adjustable up to 60mm.

Our co-founder Alex is 6ft 6" and the ebike is designed so that he can ride it comfortably.

Why does the FLIT-16 have rim brakes instead of disc brakes?

To enable our ebike to fold so small, the FLIT-16 has a 74mm hub on the front wheel. Unfortunately, 74mm hubs are not currently disk brake compatible.

What tyres are compatible with the FLIT-16?

The FLIT-16 comes with Schwalbe Marathon Racers as standard. We have chosen this tyre for its durability and excellent puncture resistance.

The rims on the FLIT-16 are 16" 349 ETRTO so most tyres made for this rim type will fit. Some of the very wide tyres like Schwalbe Big Apple will not fit.

We have tested the FLIT-16 with Schwalbe Kojak, Marathon Racer or Marathon Racer Plus tyres and are impressed with them. We recommend using any of these with the bike.

Are different handlebar displays available with the FLIT-16?

At the moment we offer one handlebar display. We have chosen this display for its large screen and ease-of-use.

Does the FLIT-16 have gears?

The FLIT-16 has a single speed (one gear) set up, perfect for city riding. The responsive torque sensor / rear hub motor system means that the motor is essentially doing the gearing for you. The ebike detects how hard you're pedalling, and then the motor amplifies your pedalling effort, so the harder you're pedalling (e.g. when you're going up a hill), the more boost you'll get from the motor.

The ebike also has 5 different levels of assistance that you can choose how boost you want from the motor.

Why single speed?

We have a single speed set up (38T to 9T) that is perfect for city riding. When you’re pulling away or going uphill the responsive rear hub motor gives enough assistance that you don’t feel the need to drop down to a lower gear. When you get to 25km/h (the point at which the electrical assistance cuts out) the gear ratio is high enough that you can cruise without too high a cadence. Speeds beyond 30kph would probably warrant a larger chainwheel but for city use we feel that the lower maintenance, improved reliability and reduced weight of a single speed transmission outweigh the benefits of multiple gears.

What is the FLIT-16 like to ride with the system turned off?

With the system turned off, the bike feels similar to riding a fixed gear bike.

Why is a rear hub motor better than a front hub motor?

We have chosen a 220W rear hub motor as we find that it gives much better acceleration than larger 250W front hub motors. This is because we can use maximum motor torque without worrying about wheel slip.

To explain more, folding bikes tend to have a more rear heavy weight distribution than non-folders (this is to allow for a compact fold when the rear part of the bike swings under). This gives relatively little weight over the front wheel. This issue is exacerbated when going uphill, since the weight distribution shifts even more rearwards and the demand for torque from the motor increases. With front hub motor ebikes this can be accounted for by capping the max torque from the motor, so as to minimise the likelihood of slipping, but this is at the cost of reduced assistance. With the FLIT-16, the max torque doesn't have to be capped, so you get the maximum amount of boost from the motor.

When will the battery reach the end of its life?

Ebike batteries will last typically for 500 charge cycles. This is dependent on how frequently the battery is charged and the conditions on which it's stored.
