Investing in Cambridge: Why We’re doubling down on uk manufacturing
At FLIT, we have always believed that how something is built matters just as much as what is built.
Over the past year, we’ve made a deliberate decision to deepen our investment in Cambridge, bringing more of the FLIT M2’s build process fully in-house and strengthening the systems that support it long term.
It’s not for the sake of it either. It’s about control, quality, and continuity.
Bringing More of the Build Under One Roof
By expanding our in-house assembly capability in Cambridge, we’ve increased our oversight of:
- Hand built bonded frames
- Cable routing
- Assembly of all parts onto the frames
- Quality control
- Packing and shipping
- Prototyping and testing
Having these processes under one roof lets us to keep tighter control and learn faster. Small improvements can be put in place immediately. Quality issues are caught earlier. Improvements compound.
For a folding electric bike, where folding efficiency, alignment, and robustness all matter, this level of control makes a real difference.
Investing for the Long Term
Committing further to UK manufacturing needs meaningful investment:
- Skilled assembly technicians
- Workshop infrastructure and tooling
- Quality control processes
- Inventory and production planning systems
It is a slower, more deliberate model than outsourcing final assembly. But it allows us to build institutional knowledge inside the company, knowledge that improves every time we build a bike.

We see this as long-term engineering stewardship rather than short-term cost optimisation.
Partnering with bike shops to improve service
Alongside expanding our in-house build capability, we’ve invested in better support infrastructure so we can responsibly expand through local bike shops.
This includes:
- Clear service documentation and technical training
- Streamlined parts supply and warranty handling
- Consistent build standards retailers can rely on
- Direct access to the FLIT technical team
Selling through bike shops isn’t simply a distribution decision. It requires confidence that every M2 leaving our workshop is consistent, serviceable, and fully supported.
So far we have set up, or are in the process of setting up, partner shops in:
- London
- Oxford
- Glasgow
- Bristol
- Norwich
- …with more on the way
By tightening control over manufacturing in Cambridge, we create a stable foundation for that wider support network.
What This Means for Customers
For riders, this translates into:
- Greater build consistency
- Stronger UK-based after-sales support
- Improved availability through trusted local bike shops
- Long-term serviceability backed by the original engineering team
Our recent price increase reflects this deeper commitment to UK assembly and expanded support. It allows us to sustain the systems required to build and support the M2 properly, not just today, but for years to come.

Building Properly
There are easier ways to assemble an electric bike.
We’ve chosen the route that gives us the most control over quality, service, and longevity, even when it demands more investment upfront.
Cambridge is not just where we design the M2.
It is where we continue to build it, refine it, and stand behind it.
