Battery vs trail: the FLIT M2’s range test

How far can the M2 go? We found out

As part of our ongoing real-world testing of the FLIT M2 folding electric bike, we recently took on the challenge of riding the Downs Link Cycle Route—a mostly off-road cycle route stretching roughly 63 km from the North Downs to the South Downs—to see how the bike’s battery performed over a long, mixed-terrain ride.

The Downs Link follows a disused railway line through Surrey and West Sussex, linking the North Downs Way and the South Downs Way. It winds through woodlands, open countryside, gravel tracks and gentle climbs—making it the perfect test for an e-bike designed for both urban commuting and weekend adventures. (View the official route guide ›) It is also, rather handily longer than the battery should last so a chance to see if conservative riding style can eek out enough range.

Terrain: Mixed gravel, dirt paths, gentle climbs and descents

Bike: FLIT M2, rated battery range: 50 km (under normal conditions)

Route: 63 km total

Objective: Push beyond the rated range in real-world conditions

Crispin & Bill about to set off

Bill and Crispin took part in the challenge—one weighing 80 kg, the other 60 kg (we’ll leave it to you, good reader to guess which is which)— which allowed us to see how rider weight impacts range in a real-world test. Weight is a key factor for e-bikes: the heavier the rider, the more power the motor must supply, especially on inclines and rough surfaces both of which feature within the Downs Link Route.

To make the comparison fair, the lighter rider set his bike to maximum assistance for the entire ride, while the heavier rider used a mix of modes depending on the terrain. This was a great opportunity to see how much difference weight alone makes to real-world range as well as rider battery management.

Interestingly, the lighter rider decided to stop after 47 km—it was his first long-distance ride, and 63 km proved a stretch too far for the day. When he finished, his FLIT M2 still had over 45% battery remaining, even after using full power the whole way. That result suggests the bike could easily have completed the full 63 km under maximum assist for a lighter rider.

The heavier rider continued to push on, tackling the full 63 km. Despite the varied terrain and frequent climbs, the M2 managed 51.63 km before the battery finally gave out—1.5 km beyond the rated range—leaving the final stretch to be completed under pedal power.

What This Tells Us

Positives

  • The FLIT M2 exceeded its official range, delivering 51.63 km of assisted riding over demanding terrain.
  • The lighter rider’s result showed how significantly weight affects battery life—achieving 40 km with 40% charge remaining, even at full assist.
  • The M2 handled gravel, woodland paths and inclines with confidence throughout.

⚠️ Considerations

  • Rider weight, terrain type and assist level all have a big impact on battery range.
  • Using maximum assist consistently will shorten total distance, but the M2 still delivered strong performance.
  • For long rides, it’s worth managing assist levels and planning a potential charging stop if you’re going beyond 50 km.

  • Start fully charged and confirm your display shows 100%.
  • Adjust assist levels on flatter sections to stretch your range.
  • Monitor your battery around the 45–50 km mark and ease back if needed.
  • Plan for variety: the route alternates between compact gravel, woodland tracks and soft ground in places.
  • Bring a contingency (charger or backup plan) for the final few kilometres.
  • Enjoy the ride: finishing by the coast at Shoreham-by-Sea makes the effort worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

This Downs Link challenge gave us great insight into how the FLIT M2 performs under real-world conditions. The heavier rider exceeded the published 50 km range despite tougher terrain, while the lighter rider—using full power—still had plenty of charge left after doing 47 km.

The takeaway? The FLIT M2 delivers reliable performance across different rider profiles and riding styles. Whether you’re commuting, exploring trails or testing your limits, it’s a capable companion that’s built to go the distance.
